Warblers in the High Country
by Curtis Smalling

Latest Update: June 24, 2008

Here is a nest of baby Chestnut-sided Warblers
We will have our regular Wednesday walk on the 25th. The walk begins at 8:30 at the Valle Crucis Community Park behind the Mast Store Annex.

I have been out in the field working on a number of projects lately including our Golden-winged Warbler project. We have found a Blue-winged Warbler female feeding babies in the past week as well as a female Brewster's hybrid. One of the male Brewster's I banded last year was mated to the Blue-winged female.

While conducting Whip-poor-will surveys in Wilkes County last week, we had two different Chuck-will's-widows calling as well for what might be first county records.

Mark your calendars now for the July meeting of the Audubon chapter to be held at the field station at Lees McCrae college. It will be a covered dish dinner starting at 6:15 on the 15th of July. Stay tuned for more info.

For more information on birds in the High Country call the Watauga Birding Hotline at 828-265-0198. Also visit www.ncaudubon.org, www.carolinabirdclub.org, and the new High Country Chapter website at www.geocities.com/hcaudubon/.

Jeff Lewis also got a really good look at this Magnolia warbler on Grandfather Mountain about two weeks ago.
